John Melhuish Strudwick - The Gentle Music of a Bygone Day

1890
Strudwick worked as a studio assistant to both Burne-Jones and Spencer Stanhope and was influenced by both. He is noted for his use of space and amazing attention to detail. But note the feet of te woman on the right which are just - wrong!

You're right - the feet DO look wrong. But that called my attention to them and oddly, they are right. The fabric folds over her left big toe to make it look longer and thinner than it is, while the right foot overhangs the left heel right where it would end, which makes the heel seem to continue further back. If you moved both of these things, the foot might look correct.

So this is a good argument for composition - don't drape or cover things in a way that makes them look so wrong!
