Ernest Board - The Legend of Our Lady of Boulogne



Previously signed and inscribed on a label attached to the reverse (now lost); watercolour
heightened with gold, 18¾ × 13 ins

Board was a Bristol painter and muralist who studied at the Royal Academy Schools.
He is part of the Neo-Pre-Raphaelite group of painters that included Frank Cadogan
Cowper, Edwin Abbey, Henry Payne and others. They were seen as the most
promising hope for a revival of decorative art in Britain. Board worked on murals in
Bristol Old Council House and The Palace of Westminster amongst others.
